EMG pickups for bass? ?

Can someone give some info on these? Preferably the active ones. What are they known for? Are they good for a wide variety of genres? I love a good midrange growly tone but still with enough bottom end to shake a building. The problem is, I've heard that they lack bottom end. What do you guys/gals think?
