Can a paper mache that's coated with toiled paper be varnished?

I'm currently making my cosplay costume with armors and stuffs, and I'm making them out of used paper and toilet paper... Since I want them to last long and a bit durable, I wonder if I can varnish them. If there's an alternative, please suggest...Much Appreciated...^__^
